Premature Menopause is not a Disease it’s a Concern

Before going in detailed survey firstly we need to understand few things about Menopause.

What Is Menopause?

Menopause is a time that each woman experience with the age. The term “Menopause” can elucidated as the changes a woman goes through either just before or after she stops menstruating, marking the end of her reproductive period, in simple words it is permanent End of Menstruation.

What Causes Menopause?

A woman birth is not a normal birth , she is born with several eggs, which are stored in the ovaries. These ovaries make the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which control menstruation and also the ovulation. Menopause takes place when the ovaries stops releasing eggs every month and which also result in menstruation stops.

Menopause is mainly a sign of aging when it happens after the age of 40. But some women can go through menopause early age, due to few reasons, such as hysterectomy, or damage to the ovaries, such as from chemotherapy. Menopause which happens before 40, is called premature menopause.

Process of Normal Menopause

The process is of normal Menopause consists of three stages:

  • Perimenopause – Perimenopause is till the point when the ovaries stop releasing eggs means before Menopause. In the last 1 to 2 years of perimenopause, the drop in estrogen quickens. At this stage, many women have menopause symptoms.
  • Menopause – This is the stage when it’s been a year since her last menstrual period. During this point, the ovaries have stopped releasing.
  • Postmenopause – These are the years after menopause.

What Conditions Cause Premature Menopause?

Premature menopause can be the result of thyroid diseases, mumps, hyperparathyroidism and Addison’s disease , genetics, or due to medical procedures. Other conditions that may cause early menopause include:

  • Premature ovarian failure – Changes in the levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones happen when the ovaries, for unknown reasons, prematurely stop releasing eggs.
  • Induced menopause – “Induced” menopause happens when the ovaries are surgically removed for some medical reasons.

A Survey

Survey was conducted in all regions South, West, East and North. The survey says that the average age of menopause in India is 48 years. Approximately, 4 per cent of Indian women experience signs of menopause between the age of 29 to 34 years, says a recent survey conducted by “The Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC)”. But for the rate of menopause is high in the case of woman between 35 to 39 years of age i.e., 8 percent. The shocking fact is women around the world normally reach menopause between 45 and 55 years of age, with a mean age of around 51 years.

The Study also concluded that these days’ women are facing an irregular menstrual cycle. This is when most of them approach a gynecologist and are confronted with premature menopause.

A woman’s body is going through so many changes on the daily basis, this is because of the atmosphere and lifestyle requirements, which is why we have been seeing cases of premature ovary failure in young adults. It affects about 1% of women under 40 years of age, 10-28% of primary amenorrhea (when a girl has not yet started with monthly periods) and 4-18% of secondary amenorrhea (when a woman’s menstruating normally stops getting her periods). It is always suggested to plan a family on time, and if a woman have medical issues then she should consult the doctor soon.

Multiple studies also stated that the age of menopause can be inherited. Menopause seems accelerated in women whose mothers experienced early menopause or premature ovarian failure. The study concluded that though heredity does play a role, the extent remains to be identified.

For every woman who care and love selflessly, care for them, care for Menopause.
