An alarming situation with the reach of 3Lakhs+ infected people worldwide, you should be aware of what is the exact lifespan of Coronavirus germs and how you can protect yourself.
As we all know the current situation because of COVID-19. A respiratory illness that is spread through the airborne droplets of an infected person’s sneeze or cough, it is high time to understand how long COVID-19 germs can survive on different surfaces to better stop the risk of transmission. Let’s get started.
On 31st December 2019 (last year) the first case of Coronavirus came in front of doctors of Wuhan city, China. Earlier the Chinese government declined that it transfers from person to person, but after the outbreak, they admitted that this Pandemic disease is the person to person transmission and is very important to stop. This is an airborne disease when an infected person sneezes or coughs. It will stay in the air and can stick to different objects around the infected person, making the chances of transmission higher. So, if a healthy person gets infected when he/she touches a surface or an object that has the virus stuck to it and then touching their own mouth, nose or eyes. This is one probability, another is obviously been in contact with the infected person.
The total time frame for a person to realize the symptoms are 14 days and in these dark 14 days, unknowingly spread the virus to others bringing a situation which we call as OUTBREAK.
As per the study, Coronavirus can survive on the surface for 9 days at room temperature. Though we can disinfect them, if not got disinfected it stays for 9 days along with you sharing the same home/room of surface as you do.
Other than this, the virus can per in air for up to three hours, four hours on copper, up to a day on cardboard, and up to three days on plastic and stainless steel, four days on wood and glass, and five days on metal, and ceramics. Plastic her is from toys to any polypropylene type of plastic that exists in this world.
Smooth surfaces like doorknobs, tabletops, etc are one of the easy and feasible ways to transmit virus from one person to another. Other surfaces such as money, hair, and clother— don’t allow viruses to survive on them for long because the small spaces or holes in them can trap the microbe and prevent it from spreading.
Human beings third-hand means their smartphone is also one of the easy carriers of the virus to you. So, it is always recommended to disinfect your smartphone from time to time as you do to your hands.
How to disinfect the Virus
The good news is that we can disinfect the virus but when it is cleaned properly with solutions containing 62% to 71% ethanol alcohol, 0.5% hydrogen peroxide, or 0.1% sodium hypochlorite. But this doesn’t mean that you will start using Sanitizer to clean the surface. Sanitizers are good to lower the risk of infection on your hands. Hard surfaces like plastic, steel need to be cleaned with the bleach or Lysol like a solution to make them disinfectant.
Avoid Touching Your Face
This is a very common and most talked sentence. Don’t touch your face. Remember most of the dermatologist recommend not to touch your face, when pimple occurs. The reason is the germs on our hand then get in contact with the infection(pimple) on our face, they spread more. This is a very simple example to make you all understand the importance of not touching your face. The same manner, the virus will also infect you, if your hand are exposed to it. Avoid it!
Wash Your Hands
Usually from our childhood, we have heard about this from our elder that to wash hands. Even, these days while teaching to my kid, there is a rhyme that ” Wash your hands-2, mother father – father mother, wash your hands“. But here not only mother father but everyone should wash there hands, once they touch any object which they believe to have virus stick to it. It is important as this will reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
Though we will talk about it separately as well, as of now, Social Distance is very important. COVID-19 is human to human transmission. So, the social distance will play a vital role to break this spreading chain. Social distancing doesn’t mean closing your Facebook, Instagram account, it means increasing the physical distance between people to avoid spreading virus. Staying at least six feet away from one other people will reduce the chance of spreading COVID-19.
As per the health experts, the person who is exposed to COVID-19 is advised to practice self-quarantine for 14 days. These valuable 14 days are enough to know whether a person is ill or not and be contagious to other people.
